Wild beast

Chipmunk storing peanuts in cheeks

We, all six of us siblings, had quickly depleted another bulk sized bag of peanuts. The chipmunk took the last shelled nut from littlest one Mary’s hand and then she ran into the house to beg mom for more. Debbie, the eldest of us, shook her head and said, “Mom is gonna flip, we all better run.”

Run we did and when we’d passed three houses in the alley we heard mom calling out to us, “Get back here all of you.” We tucked ourselves behind old man Bogey’s car and fell into giggle fits.

We could hear mom going on and on, “Life with the brood of you is a nightmare. I said no pets and you find a way to tame a wild beast.” The wild beast part got the best of me and I laughed so hard I peed myself. My two brothers and two sisters seeing my distress fell to the ground, all holding their stomaches as the laughter pains set in. I joined them and, as it was my birthday said, “It is great to be age four!”

  1. I love this piece, for all the memories of childhood it evokes, especially helpless convulsions of laughter! 😀
