Sophisticated insight

Fluorescent shades on child

As tiny as she was, her mind was filled with sophisticated insight, the kind that takes your breath away. I’d said to her she could trade the specs for pretty pink ones and Rayana said, “I don’t need rose coloured glass to make me happy!”

Her smile, her wavy hair and the waves of reflecting fluorescent light on her mother’s sunglasses made a perfect photo. Rayana ran to play with another child who had entered the homeless centre where her mom and I both work. I turned to her mom and said, “Doesn’t it send shivers up your spine when our babes display the wisdom they were born with?”

Elizabeth said, “It always does and it is only in those times we see how God equips us at birth with this intelligence. It is sad the many things in life lead us astray and change our perceptions.”

Her words reminded me of Matthew 18: 2-3 Jesus called a little child to stand among them. “Truly I tell you,” He said, “unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

We watched the interaction between Rayana and the homeless girl. They played as equals without judgement and I wished we all could be so accepting of each other. The lack of a home does not lessen the stature of any person.
